I am Roman Catholic. We have always been taught that we can pray anywhere.

It all depends on what you are praying for, and why.

Catholics are required to go to church and celebrate Mass every Sunday, and nothing else will do, simply because Jesus Christ becomes present on the altar at Mass, and the real and substantial presence of Christ constitutes a unique and particularly holy event, which occurs only within the Mass celebration itself.

Since it's typically not possible to personally encounter the risen Christ, in the flesh, in any other way, the necessity of attending Mass at church, is clear.

The same is true for non-Catholics, but in a purely spiritual way, as whenever two or more are gathered in Jesus' name, he is there in spirit ... which is another very good reason to go to church and pray, right along with everyone else.

Finally, God has always been a bit sloppy and excessive when he blesses those who specifically request his favor, "broadcasting" his grace far and wide, and so doing, also blessing many in the immediate vicinity, who might not otherwise merit it.

Personal, solitary prayer is always useful, but it's almost always much less effective than worshipping as part of a congregation.

God set it up that way.

None that I know of. In fact most of them actively encourage you to pray, praise and worship at home in your private time. What you do in church is what they call collective or corporate prayer/worship.

Only praying in church is like only talking to your best friend husband when you are in a group. You speak in public, but your private relationship grows when you are 1 on 1.:-)

if they are true christian faith... following God's example thru Christ... you do not have to be in a building to pray. Jesus went to the Garden to pray... to the hillside...

the religious buildings at that time were for teaching the scriptures more than worship and such... I only go by what Christ's examples are...

I hope you get some good answers for your essay!

I'm Catholic, but I feel free to pray anywhere. In other words, I don't pray only at Mass, but can also pray at home (or any other location). I don't know of any denomination that insists upon prayer within a church building exclusively. Most priests and pastors openly encourage their parishioners to pray anywhere.

I have been brought up in the church and disagree with their teachings. I have studied a lot of religions and have discovered the truth, it's in the Bible, I have never heard of a denomination that teaches that you can only prey in the church building. Furthermore, church is a group of believers in worship. It is not a building.

I don't think so. Most teach that you can pray anywhere. I've never heard of any church teaching that you can only pray or worship in church.

No hun...one thing the Bible says quite beautifully is...where two or more are gathered....

A church cannot dictate where people can pray or worship...if they do, then THEY are going against God.

your prayer life should be 24/7, that's how you build your relationship with God. People who only pray on Sundays and Weds, I'd be worried about their soul.

I don't know of any. So no I don't believe you have to go to church to pray. You can pray in a bathroom, in your car, at work, home or in a barn. He doesn't care where just as long as you talk to him.
