The vast difference between how the rich and poor lived was astounding to him. He felt the caste system which locked people into a certain level of life did not make sense. If anything, he felt all should have the equal opportunity to make of life what they would. After spending some time as a monk in abject poverty, he also decided this was not the correct way to live. He pointed to the middle way. A balance. I believe that seeing life from both the rich and poor sides helped him form these beliefs.

Prince Siddhartha was a well shielded son of a powerful and wealthy King. He has to be shown only of the beautiful, well provided and happy environment. Even news of death was not a common occurence to his childhood. In one of his tours with is father, He accidentally saw kinds of people begging on the street, the poorly dressed and the sick.
He began to ask why he was different, why such things should exist. So, he decided to find it in his own ways after he was not satisfied by the answers given to him.

I believe he was born into a very wealthy family and he was kept away from the injustices of the world. His family and maids made sure he was always kept away from the outside world and when he was out there, that only pleasant things were around him.
One day, while he was out, he saw an old man suffering from pain and I believe this was when he started questioning why there was pain in the world and what can be done to lessen this pain. That was when he started his quest.

He was oblivious to the harsh realities of life, as a child. He was not raised in it's influence. Not until he was a young man did he glimpse the realities of life. Because he was NOT so used to it (affected by the karma), he saw it for what it was. He could not deny the harshness of reality.
It might seem that his youth had nothing to do with his awakening, but (in my opinion) his mind was kept clean from life's reality until he was mature. If he had grown up in the harsh reality, he might not have had a fresh and mature introduction, like many people today.
So wake up!

Allegedly it was his experiences as a young adult that led him to question... he was heavily sheltered as a child from anything unpleasant, old-age, sexism, castes, etc. and surrounded by beauty, etc. only. When he journeyed outside the gates of the palace, albeit arranged trips (which allegedly hid the dying, ailing, old-age, etc. from his eyes, or tried to), he accidentally caught sight of what they'd tried to hide from him and started asking questions.
Once he started asking questions he started coming up with logical answers.

he was out on a horse and buggy with a servant. it was his first time outside of the palace gates and he saw a sick and dying man on the street.
he had never seen this before, (someone deadly ill) and asked his driver. it shattered him to the core as he had never known about serious illness or death
