yes, it makes it look a little more formal as well... if you really don't want one then take a pieces of cloth and run it over the deck and see if anything gets caught... like a dry run :)
But use a peice of scrap cloth not your dress!

Honestly I would not use one. I have not heard of or seen any instance where the aisle runner was not a disaster aka a tripping hazard. Since you mentioned you don't want one, follow your gut and don't use it. I truly would not worry about splinters because you will only drive yourself nuts when there is a very good chance that nothing happens. Even if there is one, it won't be able to cause the damage that you're expecting.

I'm not sure an aisle runner is the answer especially if you don't want one. My father-in-law tripped on ours as he was going up to do the reading. If you have a thick train I doubt it will get stuck. To be sure you can go over that specific area carefully and if you find anything that sticks out just sand it down.

Well splinters are a real, but small, concern. So you rip the train, so what, you take it to a seamstress and have it mended. You are only going to put the dress in storage after that anyway (such a silly, silly tradition we have, spend hundreds on a dress we'll never wear again). If you don't want a runner, then don't have one. You could get train girls instead, two small girls about 7 who'll walk behind you holding your train. Good luck.

If you can I think that would be a very good idea. Decks always have splinters and people can get their high heels caught or you can catch your train. Go to Home Depot or a carpet store and ask if they have any remnant runners in a nice color of your choicen maybe in a berber carpet.

I think it would add something to your wedding. I think runners are very pretty. I like the above suggestion though, get some fabric if you really don't like the runner idea & see if it catches. Be sure to use something like the fabric in your dress. For example, if you use cotton & your dress is silk there is going to be a pretty big difference on what your dress can tolerate. Good luck!

A runner will be nice and functional under these circumstances. Another great way to add to your decor would be to have a decorative runner, maybe one that has your monogram, wedding motif, names. etc. on it. This will help you not tripping or your dress ripping but will be a unique touch added to your ceremony.

Aisle runners are beautiful and they make one that's made out of artificial rose pedals now (and they look very real). They also have translucent aisle runners with beautiful deigns....check these out...
