In answer to previous respondents to this question Louis Pasteur was born in 1822. In 1796 an Englishman named Edward Jenner was trying to prevent people dying from smallpox. He made the observation that dairy maids did not catch smallpox and he came to the conclusion that it was because they had already been infected by a less damaging disease called cowpox. By innoculating people with cowpox he had found a way to prevent people catching smallpox. Sorry all of you Pasteur enthusiasts.
