Anything put to music tends to be easier to remember for some reason...when studying in college I'd make up little sing-songs for classes such as history, to help me remember information for a test, rather than trying to remember strings of facts.

No.
Trying to learn Japanese from listening to songs is like trying to learn it from watching anime or doing anything else other than having a teacher and actually studying it yourself.
Japanese and English are almost completely backwards to each other and it's impossible to pick up anything from a language without already knowing a great deal of information to begin with.
And even if you overcome that, who's to say the translation you're reading is accurately depicting the Japanese? English is a very blunt language whereas Japanese is much more subtle.

All that aside, sung and spoken Japanese are hugely different. The majority of female singers often say things they would never say when speaking actual Japanese because it helps with the song's rythm. And, just like ours, songs are often written in a way that is not spoken in Japan. Unless, of course, you speak in nearly all rhymes for most of your life and use awkward, short sentences to jump around the bush as to what you're talking about rather than actually saying it.

No, not by themselves. Popular music presents only a limited vocabulary and the diction would be awkward in everyday speech. Traditional or folk songs are very helpful and give an insight to the culture. By the way, in my opinion one of the most difficult things about the Japanese language is the cultural references that are very difficult for a foreigner to learn.

You can't learn Japanese from songs... I think if you are already studying it, listening to (or singing) songs can help you to remember words and how to use them, but if you don't already know the words, you won't learn any just from singing songs.

Songs are a great help in learning languages. They acquaint the learner with pronunciation and the rhythms of the language, as well as expanding the vocabulary. The structure of songs helps the student to remember the language as well.

It has it's pros and cons. It's good cause you can learn how the words are properly pronounced. The downside is that if you are reading japanese words in english texts. In my opinion it would be better if you start familiarizing yourself with the different japanese charcters first.
