Someone very close to me was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and has a 3rd degree felony. Is that the worst? Or is it a 1 st degree felony? And what is the difference between a 1st 2nd or 3rd degree felony and a State Felony? Sorry, I'm just trying to understand this case....

You committed some broad crime (IE murder). There are certain circumstances of the crime that would make it 1st 2nd, etc.

1st degree murder would be you planned it out.

2nd, while you still commited murder, didnt do it with intent so the punishment is less.

So, as the degrees go up, the less the crime.

Though, any felony is not a good thing.
