The (unconstitutional) purchase/gun permit requirements are locally administered. You will need to check with your locality.

As a general rule, long guns (rifles and shotguns) are considered to be sporting guns and usually no purchase permit required, other than the local age requirement.

Handguns may require a carry and/or purchase permit, once again dependant upon your locality.

Check your local sheriff office for details.

Mr. B,

As a fellow Floridian, I can say for certain...

You do not need a State issued CCW permit to buy any firearm. You need to be at least 21 to be issued a CCW permit in Florida.

Long guns - 18 years of age and a clean 'call-in' and you may walk out of the store with the firearm.

Handguns - 21 years of age, a clean 'call-in' and a 72 hour waiting period will get you the handgun. IF you have the state issued CCW permit, you may walk out of the store with the handgun, provided your call-in comes back clean.

As stated before it really depends on your state. To buy a rifle or shotgun, most likely no. You will need to be at least 18 years old and pass a background check, and perhaps wait a certain number of days, but that's probably it.

To purchase a handgun it's more difficult. You have to be 21 years old, provide proof of age/identity and pass a background check. You will probably have to take a "handgun certification test" which is a written test on how to safely opperate a weapon, and may be required to pass a demonstration showing the proper loading/unloading of the weapon.

Actually, the answer varies form place to place. In some states you only need a valid driver's license or other form of state issued ID and a three day wait period for a background check for felony convictions or warrants. Where I live there is a huge amount of paper work, a background investigation, interviews with the local police and several references who are also interviewed.

THAT is for a pistol. For a rifle, all you need is a driver's license and the required background check.

Check with your local sheriff's department for the laws for your area.

depends what state you live in. In CT you do not need a permit to purchase a gun, only to transport it. So you can buy one but you cannot take it home.......go figure.

They have people who teach permit courses in various states. You would need to contact one of these people, they must be licensed. Contact your local rod and gun club and they can refer someone.

After you take the course, usually 1 day long, you ned to fill out paperwork with the state. You can pick it up at your local town hall. You then need to go to have your fingerprints taken at your local police dept, call them for an appt. Then you need to return the paperwork along with your fingerprints to the towm hall.

Depending on what state you live in there are different fees involved.

good luck

Depends on where you live, both NYC and the state of NJ require a permit to purchase ANYTHING. I believe IL is that way as well.

The NRA site is very helpful, you can also just call the local police department or sheriff's office and ask what the requirements in your jurisdiction are.
