This seems to be the argument for "Don't ask, Don't tell" but I don't see the reason why you wouldn't want to serve with gay people. What is the reasoning behind this? I just don't understand.

It seems like if a guy or gal can shoot straight and is in good physical condition you would want the help in your foxhole. That's all I'm saying.

If you ask the actual soldiers you will find the vast majority does not care. Serving in the military is a duty not a privelage, everyone has the responsibility.

The people who make up the Armed Forces come from all walks of life. When I was in the Navy ( I just got out and I did 8 1/2 yrs) I never had a problem w/ gays in the military. In fact, I had a few friends who were. They were the same as my "straight" friends. I think that it's just the upbringing of the individual. All that is seen is the opposition and not those who do think it's ok and that is just the way that it works. Plus, you've got to consider that those lawmakers come from a time that homosexuality was not "correct" and they are the ones who decide these types of rules. I think that in the next 10 yrs it will not be an issue. But, for right now they say that it will disturb the "good order and discipline" of the services. I had an expeirence when I was stationed on a ship and a female was "interested" in me. I told her that although I was flattered, I was not interested. It didn't make me squirm and I did not feel uncomfortable being semi-naked around her. I was assured of my sexuality and that everything else would be on her, not me.

Good question!!!!

Ever seen the Movie Glory, where "colored soldiers to prove they were a white mans equal were willing to charge sure death to show it.
Of the American Japanese in World War II who lost more men trying to save a texas company from slaughter and took horrendous casualtys in every action trying to be as good.
As Good? They were in a situation that made them better than the rest.
The Spartan worship of today forgets that the underlying principle of togetheness was in bed as well as on the battellfield.
Men at Arms as well as Men in each others arms in fact picking a nice young lad was the norm not an exception.
In those times it was just sexual fun and relief male or female no diff.
it is as old as ancient writings and the Assyrians had a special group of especially gay men in arms as did many old armies and it was even known in the Israeli camps.
Men in battle too long without womenkind often turned to their fellows for comfort.

Muscle heads and homphobes are never going to admit any Gay person is their equal. Never!
The military is super macho trained, an army of one cannot be a gay guy, but you study the problem and some of the retaliaton streights ply upon gays is sadistic homosexual to the core.
From just self worship to unit worship, and anyone that is not up to their muscular standards is feminen.Throw that macho GI in prison for 10 years and he will sing like a canary to catch the eye of every young lad who enters after him.

Gays were serving in the armed services since the beginning of time but when they came out asking for more rights, equalities
and coming out in the open with their outrages outfits and showing their affections for each others caused a lot of
disapproval from the majority of the people
who turned against their stereo type and
that what created the problems and brought it to the front burner today.

I did four years aboard ship in the Navy, and I was much more concerned with the jerks that wouldn't change their sheets or take a shower and would stink the berthing compartment up. Or worried about people who weren't pulling their load, or who were mentally unstable. We had one or two more-or-less acknowledged gays aboard (out of about 250 guys), but from what I could tell, no one really seemed to mind all that much. I'm not saying anyone went out of their way to be their friend, just that their gayness was tolerated or ignored for the most part.

I don't see a problem with gays serving in the military. As long as they do their job and respect the rights and views of others and theirs are respected also. Your sexual orientation doesn't measure your bravery or your loyalty to your country. The gay people I have known in my life are just like all other people. Just like all "straight" people aren't attracted to all the straight people they see, neither are gay people, attracted to all other gay people.. Most rapists and sex offenders are "so called straight " males.
I wouldn't care as long as they were good men or women and wanted to fight and defend the country they love. The USA.

Well, why do people think that Gay people will automatically hit on someone. I think the Gay people have to worry more with the straight people bashing them. I am gay and I work with a lot of people, but I respect others and they respect me. I would never think of "hitting on" anyone that I work with. Why do people blow everything out of proportion? Gee!!!

I guess they don't like the idea of sharing the same bathrooms or showers... or sleeping quarters... fear of being "hit" on? Or fear of being seduced! OR fear of ALSO being accused of being something they're not...(gay)? Who knows, really? Maybe for the same reason some don't want to serve with Blacks or Hispanics or Irish or Italians... or Southerners...? WHO really knows?

The fact, which may offend some, is that neither Homosexuals nor Lesbians are asking for MORE rights than anyone else; they're asking and are entitled to EQUAL treatment, and as long as they can get the job done, and get it done RIGHT, what they do or don't do in the privacy of their bedrooms is no ones business, particularly the government's!

It has nothing to do with Political Correctness (sheesh, do I abhor that term!) but moreso along the lines of human rights, equal treatment and be viewed on merit and accomplishments like any other member of the Armed Services; after all, in the final analysis, they are AMERICANS, and obviously have enough pride and responsibility to join and serve our nation.

Most of the furor over gays serving in the military doesn't come from the people in the armed services - like you said, as long as they can do the job well, then most don't really give a f**k about their sexual orientation.

The majority comes from religious idiots who are convinced that the reason we haven't managed to pull off a glorious victory in iraq (and why we were attacked on 9/11, and why katrina hit new orleans) is because we don't publicly execute gays.

because some people have such inflated opinions of themselves and their perspectives that they think that every gay person is going to hit on them, and that only their way is right and moral.

to lay aside the cynical mask for a second, it has to do with this socialized view of a "real" man as aggressive and naturally violent, and if you are gay then you arent a "real" man. Its one more aspect of the bullsh*t gender roles in the US.
