I have had these 2 strays near my apartment since last summer. They need a home but I'm moving to Japan in a year. I called the vet but they want $220 to get them fixed. Any other ideas for getting them fixed or getting them a home? (Seymour, Indiana)

I know they are brother and sister becuase I have known them since they were kittens. Their mom always brought them around. The other cats were picked up but they couldn't get these two. Animal Control said they would be back in the spring. But there are SO many cats around here and it is not a no kill shelter. I have been trying to socialize them (petting, holding...) since the fall so they have a chance of getting adopted.)

What you need to do is get ahold of a local cat rescue group, and tell them your situation. Most rescues for cats will trap. And are no kill. If you don't know where to look for a cat shelter/rescue, look online for them in your location, call petco/petsmart ( they have adoption days from these places) and if you get no help there, contact a vet or other kind of pet store. Some where along those lines you'll find SOME help.
If by chance no shelter will come get them for you, you need to at least take one of them in to have them seperated. Put your own adoption ad out, and go from there. This way, at least they are seperated and you decrease chance of inbreeding, if it hasn't happened already. Chances are unfortunatly that if they've started to mate, the female is probably already pregnant. If you can get a cat shelter to come trap for her, or him- they'll find out she's pregannt right away- and there's a good chance that the babies will be terminated. As bad as that sounds, inbred cats can be a very bad thing. My mother in law ( and my interaction with her inbred cats) has a whole inbred family and they are not healthy, they are not nice, and they will ALWAYS have the problems they have due to her neglect and irresponsibility.
I hope I was of some insight as in what to do.
Good Luck!! Get them seperated asap!

You can look up some low-cost spay and neuter clinics. (Google it up and see what you can find.) Call around to some shelters and see if they will do it for free/a small price. (Explain the situation and that should help.) Do you know the cats very well? Like do they come up to you and let you pet them and stuff? If so get a humane trap (Animal control will loan you one possibly if you don't want to buy.) and set it out with some tuna or wet cat food in it. Hopefully you'll catch them. When you notice you've caught one place a sheet over the cage to help keep the animal calm. If you can't find anyone to spay/neuter for free/low cost then take it to the shelter and they will spay and neuter and try to adopt it out. Even if the animal ends up euthinized (NOT as bad as people think, it's a very fast and painless method and I've seen it done plenty of times.) due to not being able to find a home/not being suitable for adoption it's still WAY better than alowing them to have kittens ending up in more homeless animals who are unfixed who will eventually become pregnant and produce more unwanted animals and so on.

PETA (If you ment to say them and not the SPCA) shouldn't be trusted with animals. They have injected, poisened beat to death and let loose animals, they stole hundreds of animals from no-kill shelters then killed them, they have tricked unknowing people into believing they want to help get their animals fixed and then take them "off their hands" only to turn around and kill the animal, they are against the ownership of all animals and have repeativly harrassed and blackmailed many respecible animal breeders/showers. I'd rather see a stray animal (Coming from someone who is all for spay and neuter and plans to work for a shelter in the next few months.) walking around than see an animal fall into their hands. O_o

I wouldn't go with no-kill shelter either. Again, I'm all for adopting from shelters and I hate to see animals have to be euthinized but honestly...They are much better put to peace than waiting years for someone to adopt them when chances are, nobody will. Sadly most animals in this world arnt wanted and will never -be- wanted. I agree with giving them a chance but weeks that grow into months that grow into years just is too long. We have no-kill shelters all around here who are packed full of animals who haven't been adopted out and I've been watching over a few of these animals for years and the only thing that happens is they grow older and older and older and most people don't realise that older dogs/cats are just as good as puppies/kittens and refuse to adopt anything over a few years old.

Stray cats are usually not adoptable, but you can call the local SPCA and have them refer you to one of the stray cat groups that will capture and spay them for free. They do round ups. Here is a link to the national stray cat rescue group. It's called Alley Cat Rescue. I'm sure they can point you in the right direction. http://www.saveacat.org/

Also, they are going to need a series of shots too.

$220 is actually a good price for getting 2 cats spayed. Remember, this is major surgery we're talking. They will need anesthisia, etc.

If you take them in or have them fixed, you are taking responsiblity for them and it sounds like you aren't able to do that. You can trap them and take them to the Humane Society or local animal shelter. That sounds like the better option for you at this point.

TWO HUNDRED TWENTY DOLLARS!?!?! That's ridiculous! Contact your local animal shelter, the place where you adopt animals. Ask them for the name of a low-cost vet in your area. SURELY you can find a better price.

call the animal shelter. Start with getting them fixed and tell them since you have been carinng for them you will continue as a foster home until they can find a good home for them.

If you've brought them into your house, keep them separate and have the male neutered. It's cheaper than having the female done and definitely cheaper than having them both done. Eventually, get the female done as well, please. Or bring them to the SPCA so they can be adopted sooner rather than later since you know you can't keep them.

You might consider turning them in to the local animal shelter. I know that it would be a very painful decision, but they would get them spayed/neutered and try to get them to people who could care for them.
