Interesting question. In a world riddled with labels, it's not a wonder atheists have one too.

In my Buddhist, idealistic world no one has labels. I guess they just use the term atheist to describe those who do not believe in God. Though I am a Buddhist, would I not also be labeled an athiest since I do not believe in God either?

Food for thought...thanks for the question! It really is something to think about...

Ok... do you know anything about root words? How about prefixes? Take the word asexual. An animal or organism that is asexual has no specific gender. Amoebas for example, are asexual. The root word theist Comes from the greek Theos which means god. So the word atheist is not a lable, it simply means that they do not have a belief in a god. It's english... come on.

What about the people who say the Bible god doesn't exist cause he's way too wacky?

Threre's no label for that.

What about the people who say Moses didn't want anyone else to invent a god? There's no label for that.

We can't all have labels; but those who do, get used to it.

Those who don't, it's a nice feeling.

I want to be labeled something else!! I want a pretty label something that would only be written in pink. And I want it pasted to my butt so everyone will see it!

Kinda makes it sound like everyone's just constantly staring at my butt doesn't it? Well that's just not true they are really staring at my ta ta's- maybe I'll put my label there

well we could say the group of people that doesn't believe in christianity, paganism, hinduism, buddhism,..............

But that is just way too long winded,
and who says I don't label my boyfriend non-divine.

the guy below me brought up the perfect point,

Dark is not a color, but yet we still label it DARK.
labels give description, if we have no use fir them, then we already would have evolved to telepathic communication, untill we do, wee need, those "labels" as you call them, to describe for people who might not know.

We need a label to separate ourselves from everyone else. I would rather be called an atheist than a non-Christian.

It describes something meaningful but only in the context that most people believe in God and view this belief as central to their lives.
Otherwise we would be non-ice creamers.

Why does anyone need a label?

They don't exactly tell us much about the person.
