Astigmatism means that the cornea is not spherical, or round, but rather has a different curvature at different points on the cornea. Think of an eye being shaped like a football, with the greatest, or steepest, amount of corneal curvature across the laces and the lesser, or flatter, corneal curvature across the end-to-end portion of the football. A normal eye is shaped like a basketball.

It means that things are blurred in a distance. Stigmatism is an eye problem also. It makes things less sharp to see because of how the eyes were shaped and how the cornea and other parts were formed during birth.

If you are asking about "astigmatism" it is a condition of the eye where the cornea is misshapen, more of a football shape than a round proper shape.
The word "stigmatism" means:
stig•ma•tism
Pronunciation: (stig'mu-tiz"um), [key]
—n.
1. Optics.the property of a lens that is stigmatic.
2. Pathol.a condition in which stigmata are present.
