Atheist is word borrowed from the Middle French "atheisme," from the Greek "'atheos" denying the gods, (a-without + theos, a god.)

Atheism then is the condition of an absence of belief in God or gods.

Simple really.

Not a believer of god

A=not
theist= a believer of god (or gods)

The theist takes it on faith that God exists.
The atheist takes it on faith that God does not exist.
The Gnostic knows there is a god.
The agnostic doesn't know if there is or isn't a God, but wants to be buried with a spare suit, just incase there is an afterlife.

An atheist is a person who believes that there is enough evidence to warrant the claim that God does not exist. Now, that isn't quiet as similar as saying "they don't believe in God." There is a logical difference.

Someone who believes in no god.

Theus (or something like that) = god

prefix a- = no

Never had latin in school so have no idea whether I've used the correct translations. All I can say is my mother likes to believe she is a atheist, she's just anti-catholicism (ironically enough both my brother and myself have been baptised in a catholic church) And that I am a multi-theist. o.o

Atheism is the state either of being without theistic beliefs, or of actively disbelieving in the existence of deities. In antiquity, Epicureanism incorporated aspects of atheism, but it disappeared from the philosophy of the Greek and Roman traditions as Christianity gained influence. ...

Atheist was a death metal band from Florida, founded under the name R.A.V.A.G.E. (which stands for Raging Atheists Voving A Gory End), whose music was highly technical and sometimes reminiscent of jazz. They combined brutal riffs with subtle latin music arrangements, much like in Cynic's cult album "Focus".

one who believes that there is no God. (atheism)

A person for whom the idea of god is senseless. Not to be confused with a person who hates (and neccessarily believes in the existence of) god.

Atheist:: one who believes that there is no deity.

This is a funny question, to me, since an Atheist must believe in the possibility of a Higher Deity to not believe in it. ;-)

'Theist' means 'one who believes in a God'

Therefore 'Atheist' means 'one without belief in a God'
