Provence is the place in France. Provenzano is Italian for someone who is from there.

Someone from Provence. I know it's a place in Europe, not sure exactly where

It's Italian for "provincial". Yes, it could mean they were from Provence, but it's just as possible they were from one of the southern provinces which are nearer to Italy and when they settled they referred to themselves as "French provincials".
