I wonder how few people know what the acronym CPDLC is?

I have it now, thought we don't use it on our airplanes, yet.

However, it looks to me as the ground stations and aircraft are able to broadcast and receive the info without the use of satellites if they are within normal RF range. This system only supplements normal voice comm. You would need a display unit in order to use this, and the pilot has to log in. Even tho your radio may have the ability to send and receive data, it won't work unless the aircraft is configured for it, and the ATC airspace you are in is using it.

When it transitions from the FIRs to domestic use, AND becomes cheap enough for a retired old fart, I'll worry about it.
