Legally ...I have no idea .... but ethically .. I would say yes ... the drivers who are goofing off could shape up and the drivers who are good employees ...if they found out about the tracking devices would justifiably be hacked off ... and then you would have a bigger problem ... use the devices but be honest and up front about it ....

Do you own the company? If so there is no reason why you can't put tracking devices on YOUR vehicles. The employees do not have to know. It is not a violation of their rights, because they do not own the equipment. That is solely at the descretion of the person or entity which owns the equipment. I worked for a private small company who let us take their cars home and use them during our lunch breaks. We just couldn't use them on our days off. They had tracking devices on the cars but did not tell us until either we did something to get fired, or at the 3 month review before a raise. I was told at the review, my boss thanked me for being responsible, and gave me a .50 cent raise.

I'm no lawyer but, I believe that you can do this without notifying the employees (in the US).
As far as being fair, almost every company monitors the activities of employees. You surf the web w/ an employer computer - you know they are monitoring where you visit.
You make calls w/ an employer phone, they may be listening. Right to privacy does not extend to your workplace.
Honest employees have nothing to fear. You're being paid to work.. not goof off.

If you inform them they know yes but you then have covered you back if they dont like it but would get a witness to hear you do it

They are your vehicles to do with as you choose. However, it won't be long before the drivers know that they are being tracked. That sort of thing just seems to leak.

Why don't you just fire them outright? You are not under any obligation are you? Labor laws vary state to state however. look into the laws and then make your decision. I know that NJ is a so called "employment at will" state. You can be fired by your employer for any reason at any time really in a place like that.

I know a Taxi company that had them installed in their vehicles and the employees were informed. That's enough to stop the hanky-panky. It worked.

I'd tell 'em, that might be enough to stop the fiddles. If they're stupid enough to keep on, enough said!
Worked for me. Suddenly everything went according to the rules - job done.

advantageous some way of removing the monitoring gadget from the automobile ... w/o dropping capacity to it .. shop it intact .. because of the fact if there remains capacity to it .. that's nevertheless sending a sign ... yet while u harm it .. they'll understand somethings occurring.
