I am going to assume since you posted in Los Angeles, you mean somewhere around metro L.A.---- All other things being equal try Simi Valley, ThousandOaks and West L.A. I think you will find something there you will like...
EDITED COMMENT:-I think a lot of peeps here are right, maybe the first question that should be asked is WHERE IS MY JOB LOCATED...then when you figure that out...try and get some place close to work...Even with all the warnings, I still think people underestimate how heavy the traffic is...Think minutes to work not miles....

That depends. Southern California is a big area! You can live in the Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego or Riverside counties and feel like you are in a differnet world in each one! Take a look at what each area has to offer that might be of interest to you and your family.

Southern California is a big place and depends on what you are looking for. Beach, desert, forest, urban, small town? We have it all. Keep in mind that most of southern California is an expensive place to live.

you should move to Cerritos California a suburb of Los Angeles. Low crime, excellent school district including Gretchen Whitney High one of the best in the state, and a state of the art library. The best part is, you might be able to find a house for 500 grand which is cheap in LA and a bargain when you think about the type of city Cerritos is.

the best areas I think are (depending on budget) the South Bay area like Torrance, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes or on the complete opposite side Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Laguna.
Now, if you're on a budget you can get really nice property for great prices in the desert part of our state like Corona and fontana. Just stay away from LA county, Riverside and san bernadino and you'll be ok.

i think of Westminster or backyard Grove are wonderul cities to stay in. that's neither city nor suburan. it fairly is somewhat in-between. the only situation is the housing costs are high priced! yet i think of an condominium is fairly good priced. different than that there are extraordinary and unique Vietnamese cuisines right here. I recommed you attempting Pho! As on your song occupation Westminster is approximately an hour far flung from those "huge" places. it is likewise approximately and hour and a nil.5 from CalArts. The coastline is 10 minutes (by employing vehicle) from right here too. you may pass to the mountains in an hour. and the wilderness around an hour too! the human beings indexed right here are friendly. no longer too gossipy lie small towners yet no longer too tough like new yorkers. the crime fee is low (yet there are nevertheless some gangs yet i dont you will would desire to agonize) and the climate is average. So, i opt to advise you shifting to Westminster or backyard Grove. wish this enables!

You need to be a little more specific with your question. I guess it depends on what line of work you are doing, and what kind of place you can afford to live..
Pasadena is nice, Santa Barbara is nice. Parts of LA are nice. San Diego is nice...but, hey these are all totally different. You should start by figuring out where you have to work and then see what makes sense frome there. Commuting is such a drag in So. Cal. traffic blows.

the areas with statistically the lowest crime rates are the Thousand Oaks are and Simi Valley (a lot of cops live there.)
you will, of course, pay for the privilege.
the LAUSD school system is dodgy, with a few bright spots. unless you can afford private schools, check out the school districts in some unincorporated areas, like Burbank, Glendale, Santa Monica.

Simi Valley is very nice and low key. Many LAPD officers in Simi Valley. We have always felt safe. It is to the west in Ventura county. Thousand Oaks is very nice as well. I would suggest looking in Ventura county. The drive isn't really that bad, into LA, all things considered. Simi Valley is also one of the safest cities in the U.S. look it up.

If you have a decent amount of money, look into Rancho Cucamonga. If youre looking for beach environment I suggest Huntington or local beach areas (Hermosa, venice) If you want mountains and stuff you can go to Big Bear or Crestline.
Theres alot of cities here each offering different 'feels' for your tastes.
