You file a W-4 usually when you start a job, to determine how much federal tax to withhold from your wages.

At the end of the year, you will receive a tax form W-2 that reports your total wages and tax withholdings for the year. You report the W-2 on your tax return.

A W-4 is a form that you fill out for your employer that directs the company on how much you will have withheld for income taxes. At the end of the year, you'll get a W-2 which shows how much you made for the year and how much was withheld.

A W-4 form is the form you file with your employer so they know at what rate to withhold taxes from your paycheck.

A W-2 form is the form your employer gives you at the end of the year that tells how much you earned and how many taxes were withheld and you use it to file your income taxes.

Clear as mud?

A W4 sez what is being with-held from your pay (how many
dependents and such)

A W-2 is furnished by your "boss" for filing with your income
tax and tells the government, in dollars, how much has
been withheld and forwared for the year.
