It depends on the breed, or the excitability in the animal. Sometimes a breed will have a recommended fence height, so you could try researching that. Some dogs might also be able to simply climb a chain-link fencs as well.

It depends on the dog. Obviously a basset will have a hard time with this requirement. Many larger breeds jump over that height easily. Also, conformation will play a role. Some dogs, like the chow-chow were bred to NOT jump so they could be kept in a yard with a small fence and their conformation is ill-suited for jumping and probably could not clear 4 feet.

I have Great Danes and they don't climb, they walk over it ararararar, small joke! I have neighbors with boxers and we watch the dogs basically just climb over the fence and come over and visit and we tell them to go home and back across the street and climb over the fence. I also have had a mutt that led the pack, and I had always wondered how he ended up in front of the house from being in the back yard. With no holes under the fence, we wondered how it happened, (with a little inkling of an idea, but we tried to dismiss it with his age 12 yrs of age X 7= 84) so we set up a video camera to see how he escaped and lo and behold over he went but he was slick, did it with out the others (the other dogs) watching. So yes I believe with evidence they can shall and will climb. I suggest 6 ft privacy wood picket (with the pickets inside)

It really depends on the dog, and don't be fooled by the size of the dog.... Just the other day, I watched my neighbors smaller breed dog ( it was about the size of a beagle) jump their four foot fence.

It depends on what size dog you have. We have 4 foot fence to and one our Jack Russell terriers used to jump it all the time. But now she does not do that anymore.

Depends on the dog. My pit bull can climb the 6 ft brick wall that surrounds my backyard, but I doubt a chihuahua could do it...

Depending on what kind of dog it is then it's pretty easy. Four ft. is not high and if he want it enough, he'll get to the other side.
