The bottom ball has been rubbing the back side of the gums of my front bottom teeth and now I have to have skin grafting! I didn't even realize this was happening until it was too late. I got a smaller ball and hoping that will keep it from getting worse but I'm considering taking it out completely.

At this point it may be best to remove the piercing.

Many people have the same problem, and most times it can be fixed by getting a shorter barbell. Try to get one as snug as possible that still allows your tongue to move around.

Imprper placement or piercing angle can be the culprit as well. If the piercing is too far forward, it can present gum problems, as well as the possibility of tooth damage. If the piercing is angled incorrectly, it can cause the bottom ball to rub against the gums.

You can also try getting acrylic balls for the barbell or another softer material. Make sure the bar itself is still surgical steel or titanium. Softer balls will still erode gums if the above problems are not taken care of (if they apply)

In the end it's up to you if you want to try these things or just remove the pirecing. Gum erosion and tooth damage are risks that come along with tongue piercings, proper piercing and jewelry can minimize the risks, but not eliminate them completely. (so you could do everything right and still have a problem)

Good Luck!

i had the same thing happne. after having my tongue pierced for six years my dental hygenist pointed out that my gums had been pushed down. she said if it continued to happen i could lose my front bottom teeth. i took out the piercing and three years later my gums have come up but they are still pushed down a little bit. it could take a couple more years to fix itself. i say take it out. it's not worth losing your teeth is it?

You need to try a shorter bar, and with a acrylic (plastic) ball. The metal could be hurting you. Clean your mouth often, with scope, half scope and half water, just like when you got it pierced. You need to minimize the bacteria so it can heal. Shouldn't take it more than a week.

oof, thank goodness that did not happen to me with either of my tongue rings. if it is bothering you and it is pushing down on your gums, then i suggest you take it out. it's not worth it to not have teeth later on in life.

i've had mine in for 9 years and had no complications at all, except when i got the tip re-pierced, that bled a lot. then it was fine a week later.
