It is a psychological disorder. It is more about control than the food. If they feel that aspects of their lives are out of control, then sometimes they feel the only thing that they CAN control is how much or how little they eat. It is not about pity. It is about compassion. There may be aspects of their lives that you know nothing about (if they were abused or molested as children, controlling parents, perfectionism, etc). Go to the library or google anorexia and inform yourself about it...if you can't find the ability to have compassion, then at least try to avoid being deliberately mean...

Do you think it's pretty stupid when people get depressed and can't snap out of it too? Anorexia is a serious mental illness, and what is really ironic is that Anorexia is not really about being thin, it's about having control. Some people only see the superficialities, they don't see want to see the deeper reasons behind the way people behave.

Take care.

I became anorexic at age nine. i didn't know what anorexia was. I didn't know I was starving myself. All I knew was I wanted to fix things in my family and it wasn't working...somewhere in there I stopped eating. 19 years later, I am still trying to rid myself of the disorder. It is like any other illness. I have been in residential treatment twice...the second time for fourteen months straight. I have been hospitalized over a dozen times. I am run down, sick all the time, dizzy, and weak. Do you think I really like this?

I wish you could spend one day in my shoes and experience the battles that go on in my head every second of the day.

I am trying to recover too. As I said in a response yesterday, I try to consider the source and not hold grudges with ignorant, uneducated people.

nope. I think it is stupid to starve yourself. I have come so close to doing it before but I had help. I think it was stupid of me though.
At the time I was 5'3 and 85 pounds and I thought I was fat. Now I am 5'6 and 100 pounds and I think I am just fine. I have gained weight. ( I was 12) (Now I am 13)

No, I don't pity them but it is a mental disorder. Sure, they may know that if they don't eat they'll die but it becomes an obssesion and in order to become healthy again, they need treatment.

They get in a rut of being self obsessed. They don't realize it. When people claim they are selfish they try to hurt themselves more by not eating, thinking as long as you hurt yourself you can't be thinking only of yourself.

They are totally focused on themselves and just don't realize it... so yes that's sad. More sad for those around them.

I dont think it is a disease. A disease is something you cant control. i seriously think you can control the fact of putting food in your mouth. But society makes you feel bad when you do...so it is a really hard subject that a lot of woman...and some men face!

Nope, its thier own fault for allowing themselves to go to that extreme. Maybe if it were young girls...12 13 and below. They r still children and we r suppose to form a good society around them. But if they r well into thier teens and stay so shallow, it is their duty to mature and form a strong well rounded character for thier own well-being.

anorexia usually is not about eating.. its usually about control. they cant control other aspects of their lives but they can control what goes in their body.
