No, people suffer because that's how life works. Sometimes, bad things happen to people, both good and bad. We should be compassionate to others because it's the right thing to do. I've often helped others who have not helped me. It's not always about give and take.

If I see someone suffering and I'm in a position to help, I do so without taking god or the lack of one into consideration.

Part of the reason we go through trials is to minister to others with the comfort we receive from God 2 Corinthians 1:1-5

Suffering happens as too present an oppurtunity for compassion, or because, sh!t happens, depending on theist/atheist worldviews. Suffering is part of the free will mechanism that gives us chances to care (or not)

Perhaps. Knowing what suffering entails allows us also to know what joy and happiness are as well. Without one, you really wouldn't know what the other was. We do learn to be compassionate with opportunities to have compassion.

I know that this might sound a little weird, but believe it or not, God does certain things to people to bring them closer to Him. To make them believe in Him because what they are going through is to much to only rely on themselves. Like I said, I know it might sound a little odd, but it's true. Growing up I wasn't a Christian, but certain things happened in my life that were way too much for me to handle by myself. And I finally turned it over to God. Have you heard of the phrase, "God won't give you anything you can't handle." There are sometimes where I just want to scream, "Either lighten my load, or strengthen my back!" But in the end, God gets us through everything, whether you believe in Him or not.

No, it's because of sin in the world....But He uses it to make us aware of suffering so we learn compassion.

You don't need an omnipotent creator being or religion to learn compassion... some people are born with it and it can be cultivated in an atheist setting.
