You need to learn about the area in which you travel to. Get the status of what "diseases" are higher risk of getting. Make sure you get your appropriate shots for airborne diseases. If you are not a self sustained person in the area of controlling your hormones; make sure you know what areas of the township is for streetwalkers, pimps... the high risk of town that is HIV/AIDS infected. Not trying to be funny, rude, etc., but this is what you really need to find out before going. Some countries over there are 69% infected with HIV/AIDS, where other countries have less percentage of the population infected. Good luck and God bless you!
Edit~ as another poster said; "don't drink the water", make sure if you order a soda that comes in the bottle.. have them open it in front of you. If you don't, they could easily slip something in your pop. Never accept an open bottle of beer, water, pop, etc unless it was open in front of YOU.

I would hope that you are going with a group of people who could answer this question for you. Don't be an independent missionary. Get the shots required for the area. Learn about the insects and animals you will run into. Be advised you will probably come home with intestinal parasites or a virus that you may never shake. I really don't think it is worth the effort to go to Asia or Africa as a missionary. They have their own perfectly good religions which have been around a lot longer then the catholic political machine... I mean religion.

Asia- Keep away from banana spiders (you'll never know they bit you, as they have an anasthetic in their venom) and the Habu snake as well (looks kind of like a rattle snake with no rattle) Bats are not dangerous, but will occasionally get confused and dive bomb you. This hurts, because some of them have a 6 foot wingspan. They're hilareous to see- like a giant fuzzy pterodactyl. Dont go swimming in the ocean in August. (long story which any of the natives will be happy to tell you)

I think you should go to your doctor and get all the necessary vaccinations. Try learning their language (at least tourist language) and learning about their history and culture. Try learning what are some do's and don'ts of the country you are going to visit....you wouldn't want to accidentally offend anyone. Expect to see a lot of poverty, but also realize that a lot of these very poor people will be among the friendliest and happiest you will ever meet. Good luck!

Make sure your shots are up to date and learn about the possible diseases you can contract, along with learning about parasites. Not to be an alarmist, but your health is most important, after that ALTRUISM and WISDOM.

Learn as much as you can about the country you are going to, and their language. You might also need some vaccinations.
