We live on the river and have seen a female duck going inside the box. When should we expect to see the baby ducks leave the nest.

Once she starts incubating you can expect to wait around 30 days (25- 37 days ), once they've all hatched they usually leave the nest within the first 24 hours (usually in the morning) , if your nest box is high this can be quite amazing to see the little ducklings launch themselves out of the box and land uninjured.

Wood Duck Eggs

You are SO lucky. Wood ducks are beautiful.

They will take from 27 to 37 days to hatch. Cool weather means closer to 37 days, while hot weather will have them hatching closer to 27 days. So, you can monitor for yourself if they're likely to be an early or late hatch...

If you're vigilant, you can even videotape the great event when the babies leap from the nest. Listen for peeping at around the time you think they're likely to be hatching. Once you hear peeping, it'll be up to two days, so keep an eye out and keep the camera handy.

Mom will sit outside calling, and that's your cue. The babies are going to be coming out. Within a short time, the babies will jump from the nest to answer mom's calls.

It should be beautiful. Good luck.

28 days, and the ducklings will start leaving the nest with mum about one or two days after that. They will stay with her for about 6 weeks.
