You cannot join the French Foreign Legion unless you are NOT French. Thus the name.

Notice the word Foreign in the name. Years ago the legion was made up entirelly of foreigners, people from all parts of the world.
No questions were asked about your background or criminal record. The Legion at that time was a tough fighting force.
Now the Legion is made up of Frenchmen. It's no longer a tough fighting group. It's just a group.

No, you do not have to be French to join. If you join, you are given a new identity. If accepted you have a minimum commitment of 5 years. You may reenlist after that. Once you've successfully completed your service, you are given a card with a telephone number to call for help if you ever find yourself in trouble, they will "assist" you, anywhere in the world, they will come get you. It's very grueling. Good luck!

No you don't have to be french when you join, but you will be a french citizen when you leave after 5 years. You have to be very tough to survive in this lot.
