The ancient world had many needs, among which were ways to make hard work a little easier, (that still inspires new inventions). Studying the problem is the best way to be inspired to try new solutions. "Science" of invention differs from what we call science today. Ingenuity, inspiration, innovation, and basic engineering (with a little bit of genius) fills the need and finds solutions. That all could be called science.
Look up Archimedes, Aristotle, and Leonardo daVinci for more help.
