First of all, check on the website www.crucial.com and use the system scanner to see what RAM your pc is "supposed" to take and make sure the memory you are using is the correct type.

If the memory is correct, what you might be refering to is a "system bios" update, as you cannot actually 'edit' it. You must go to the manufacturer of the pc (or motherboard), and download the latest BIOS.

Some systems, like Dell, can be installed while running Windows. Other mfr require you to make a boot floppy.

Once the bios is up to date, if you still have problems, you should run one of the memory tester programs.
