Census records are not available after the 1920 census. These are still protected from release. The 1930 census records will be released in 2010.
The best way to get around this is research your grandfather's name and location in 1920 and 1910. With luck, you'll be able to get his parents' names, too, and go back further.

You won't be able to access any census records after 1901, if your family is from the UK.
If you have the birth ceritificate of your mother, then you could look for the marriage certificate of the named parents (your grandparents). That'll tell you the names of their resepective fathers (your gt. grandfathers), and also give an indication of their ages when they married.
From that you can work out when your grandparents were born, and look for more birth certificates; you should be able to locate your gt. grandfathers on the 1901 census.

if you have your mothers birth cert, you know where she was born and registered,go to or get intouch with the registery office and they will help you, and also get yor marrige certs, and they will give you more info,we did ours after my parents were dead,no idea why we waited so long, but obtained a birth cert for my dad, and it then gave us the name of my dads mother and father and also my fathers mothers maiden name, and all it cost us was £7.00,for each certificate we purchased, went onto genes reunited, but its so expensive, they say a free search, and when nothing came up for the name we were looking for thats when they say you need to pay for 10 searches and if nothing comes from that 10 you pay for another 10 and so on until you get a result. we spent £300. but stopped then and thats when i decided to go to registery office.good luck.

If you are in the USA you can go to the national archives or you might try the records that the Mormon Church has in their records. You do not have to be Mormon to find the records because they have records for all different religions and nationalities.
