right this is the reason of the commandment against graven pictures from the attitude of a Catholic who became into experienced in close to jap Archaeology at a mundane college. while you're certainly curious and not purely Catholic bashing, this would desire to help. interior the OT circumstances human beings interior the classic close to East had a diverse attitude approximately gods and goddesses than the Judeo-Christian appropriate. interior the Bible, the human beings made and worshiped a golden calf. The golden calf became into their god. actually. they did not think of there became into the different type to it however the single they made. whilst the calf became into destroyed, their god became into lifeless. historical Egyptians seen their gods and goddesses similarly. They believed that they required food and possibilities as a manner to be maintained and that they'd bodily inhabit the statues of them and the statues would flow around and consume the food that became into left for them. Pharaohs have been each and every now and then suggested to anticipate flow from a statue until now taking action. those human beings worshiped those graven pictures as gods and goddess. interior the Bible, the Christian God, is asserting that he isn't a to be worshiped as purely a statue, like another gods and goddess of the area. he's greater suitable than that. he's the single and the only and that's all he will settle for. Catholics understand this interpretation, so all of us recognize that having a image of Christ or a crucifix would not intervene with that worship. all of us recognize that if the crucifx falls off the wall that Jesus isn't harm. as long as you do not think of the statue is God, you're actually not inviolation of any commandment.

Uh oh, kiddies! He's going after the Catholics now.
JC, where does the Bible say that you are supposed to be an arrogant twit on the internet? Scripture and verse, please.
Or you could say that isn't in the Bible, Reverend Red Mage, and that will suffice.

Catholics don't worship statues; take it from me, I am one. Alot of other Christians think that we do despite what we say. Look, you guys aren't Catholic, so you can't really know.
What are statues for? Reminding us of the person who it looks like. That's all they're used for, at home or in Church.
Reading the Bible, it would be obvious to anyone that statue worship is totally stupid. It's also plain that God wasn't forbidding the making of statues, just the worship of them, because a chapter or so after He 'forbids' them (Ex 20:4-5), He orders the cherubim to be made for the Ark. (Ex. 25:18-19)

That is a direct violation of the 10 commandments. In fact, making these images and using them in worship violates the very 1st commandment. That was a pagan tradition that somehow became an integral part of their worship. Hmmmm. As blatant as this is, I wonder how there are so many Catholics who just follow suit.

Hey JC. Keep up the good work! Catholics will tell you (are you ready for the play on words here?) they "venerate" the statues, not worship them (God forbid!).
As for the cherubs on the arc of the covenant, please ask them to show you where does God say: "Worship the cherub". In fact, His permission to make these statues, when looked at closely (and in the context!) shows us how angelic beings worship God in heaven. Thus, the cherubs give us an example of how we are to worship God (who are the cherubs bowing to?)

I'm sure it says somewhere not to use idols in worship. I believe it might actually be one of the ten commandments, but my bible knowledge is very rusty so don't quote me on it.

The same question can be sent right back to you, I"m sure.
Where in the bible does it say people should sit in pews while they worship? Where is the word "pastor" or "reverend" and where does it say that he should stand behind a pulpit to preach?
Where, in fact, does it say that people should carry Bibles to Church?
Is the word "Bible" even in the Bible?

No where but no where does it forbid it. Statues are just for visual use, and if you don't remeber God commanded carving of cherubs which were used in the temple on the side of the main altar.
