They would defile the place we are told. That may not be the case. It may be because they are not ready to receive the "spiritual truths" contained in there.
There are a number of things that go on in there that bring praise to Satan and not to God. The presence of occultic and masonic symbols would be a shock to some.

Do a quick glance through the Bible about the temple, you'll see that God has always been strict about who can go in, and when, and places a high value on keeping it a place of purity. The only time in the New Testament that you see Jesus get actually violent and angry is when He was cleaning out the Temple.
Nothing has really changed in that regard (although I doubt the old people at the front of the temple will get angry, they'll just ask you to stay in the lobby). As others have pointed out, not even every member of the church is always allowed in, you have to be spiritually prepared and living certain precepts of the gospel first.
But for those who are prepared and living worthy to enter, the temple is wonderful, it's like completely leaving all the noise and confusion of the world behind for just a little bit; it's a wonderful sense of peace.
until next time meatbot :)

The temple is a very sacred place, and only worthy baptized members of the church are able to enter it. Not even all Mormons can enter into the temple. First, you have to be interviewed by a member of the priesthood- holding bishopric and get a temple recommend. Anyone can go into the temple before it is dedicated, but you need a recommend after it is dedicated.

I dated a Mormon for many years... (a Mormon and a Buddhist that is a whole different story...lol)
Anyways I often went to church with him... but I was not let into the temple as I was not pure enough... even people who are Mormon need to make applications to go into the Temple if it is not an "open house"

As has been said, it is a sacred site. On a very practical level, it would not make sense for "visitors" to be there. The purpose of the temple is to perform ordinances. Those who have recommends, and attend the temple are prepared for the experience. Aside from attending a marriage sealing, there is really nothing an outsider could do.

They can as long as it hasn't been dedicated yet.
It's sacred and we don't want people who are not spiritually ready to misunderstand what's done. Also, we, or at least I don't want to be made fun of, it's bad enough that everything is on the internet, I don't want to be in a place where I want to truly let my guard down, then be made fun of.
