Actually most of the missionaries are paying out of their own pocket to do that.

As someone who has done the mission thing myself - I'll simply tell you that the answer to your question is in the message they share.

Because they desire to serve people and share the Good News of Christ and the importance of His sacrifice. In most instances in the Bible when Christ asked individuals to follow him or be in His service, he did not pay them, nor did they take with them that which was valuable in a worldy sense. Additionally, I have found that when you are serving for the sake of serving, and not getting paid for it, it is much more meaningful and those you get in the service are more often there with the right motives and purpose.

Missions aren't for everyone. I have two older brothers who didn't serve missions, but I did. It was an amazing and awesome experience. Also, when families are unable to pay the Church will make sure they are provided for. The Church works like a fine watch.

It's considered service to God, and preparation for life in general. Most are 19-22 and have never lived on their own before. Serving God and doing so for 2 years without a visit from family & friends back home while cooking and cleaning for yourself teaches a lot about life to a young man. It also develops leadership skills which can be valuable when through with a mission. And talk about a strong work ethic! Wow!

It is a demonstration of their love of the Lord and of his Gospel. Why would someone do that? Because they believe in what they preach. It might be worth listening to with that kind of conviction....

They oughta do something about those uniforms, too.

Seriously, I know they get some kind of stipend, because they used to come to my corner of Orlando a lot, and some of them were nice kids just looking to have an adventure. It's pretty small, though.
