I'm am going to Fort Hood soon and I don't know a lot about it, (other than lots of deployments), but what can I expect about the base and the surrounding areas? What are the housing accomadations for an E-5 with no dependents? Is the the PX large and or is there other shopping nearby? Is there a lot to do off post? What can you tell me?

Fort Hood is a city by itself. The base is HUGE. The main PX is a least as big as a Super Walmart. Just about every national chain store is available off base. As a single E-5 I had an apartment off base in Killeen, about 1/4 mile outside one of the gates. Killeen is like any other Army town. Lots of pawn shops and all that. A large Korean immigrant population. When I was there 1990 to 1992 all the bars were actually clubs you had to join. The next town over, Harker Heights is one giant speed trap for soldiers. They will pull you over for anything and everything, including driving 36 in a 35 zone. Expect to sweat like you've never sweat before. 110 in the shade is not uncommon in the summer.

Good Luck and thanks for serving.

Hi,

I can't answer your housing question, but I can help with the rest.

There are actually two commissaries and two PX's. One commissary is very large and always crazy busy. (I always recommend the one on the 4 ID side of post, by the airfield.)

While there are 2 PXs, they do different things. The smaller PX (by the airfield and the smaller commissary) is mostly a furniture store with a barber shop, small food court, UPS store, etc.

Like other posters said, nearly every chain store and restaurant you can think of is in Killeen. If you can't find it there, go to Temple (about 20 minutes away). Austin is only an hour away with TONS to do and see. Salado is on the way and just a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. (Small shops, etc.)

Others have already told you the rest.......

I don't know what your housing allowance is, but if you can find an apt. in Harker Heights, you might be better off. It's nicer than Copperas Cove and Killeen.

If you can get on post though, do! They started renovating quarters about three years ago. I don't know how far along they are, but chances are good that you'll get a newly renovated apt. Check it out and see.

Good luck and enjoy!

Fort hood is huge and if you can not find it in the Killeen area then Austin and Waco are only and hour away. San Antonio is only 2 hours away. The Barracks here and pretty bad so as an E-5 with no dependents an off base apartment is the way to go. Stay to the South side of Killeen and away from Rancier. There are alot of break ins in that area to include the Lake road area.

Fort hood is the Largest base in the world, the PX is great, the people are awesome, and Copperas cove is the nicest town I've seen, my husband and I were placed here, it's nice, Hood is a very nice place, besides the fact that some of the "soldiers" should not have made it out of BCT, you are bound to meet the best people you will ever know here....If you are going to be stationed with 1-22, 4th ID, they will be leaving in December, you'll definately want to get to know the Pearsons, they are great people.

It has a large commissary. A good hospital. My son was born there. It had two golf courses. Good housing area. 2 High Schools. Great high school football. Also check out Copperas Cove. It's outside the west gate. You may find some good housing there. The post is so big, if you can get post housing that's where I'd stay. There's a mall in Killeen. This post deploys a lot.

i recognize various hundred thousand loopy Muslims... those working Iran, those that ran Iraq some years in the past, those in the Taliban, take your %. pin heads. replaced into it predicted. no longer likely. Am I stunned? no longer likely. The liberals residing in our united states of america will have the potential to maintain us all in threat for the the remainder of our lives because of the fact they are bleeding hearts who anticipate others to guard them with "words".
