I'm not sure you can get a clear answer here, because I think it will depend upon person opinion and interpretation. But then again, it's religion, and in all religion you need to have faith.

God has always provided a way of knowing those who are His followers, and it has varied from time to time. But, bottom line, if you are able to provide God with a sign, that He knows, which will enable Him to know that you have fulfilled all His requirements and ordinances, then that makes it easier (not saying that is why, just hypothesizing). When it comes down to it it doesn't matter. If you want to learn about the Mormon faith, from Mormons (because that is the only place you'll get unbiased and guaranteed accurate information), then all power to you. If you could care less, or aren't interested, then move on and respect those that believe differently.
