Because it is literally dedicated as His house.
April 3, 1836. The Savior appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in the Kirtland Temple. Moses, Elias, and Elijah also appeared and gave priesthood keys to Joseph and Oliver. Elijah brought the keys of the sealing power, which make it possible for families to be sealed together forever. (See D&C 110.)
1898. Lorenzo Snow records an account of the Savior Jesus Christ appearing to him in the Salt Lake City, UT temple, "...His hands, feet, countenance and beautiful White Robes, all of which were of such a glory of whiteness and brightness that (he) could hardly gaze upon Him." President Snow told this to his granddaughter which she later reported, " Now, granddaughter, I want you to remember that this is the testimony of your grandfather, that he told you with his own lips that he actually saw the Savior here in the Temple and talked wit Him face to face."
I have no doubt the Savior still speaks face to face with the prophets in the temples. It is afterall His church and they are His mouth-piece.

How can you even question something like that? That's like asking Christians why they believe an angel appeared to Abraham and told him not to sacrifice his son. Or why they believe Mary conceived a child without having intercourse with a man. I think I've mentioned it before, but religion is personal and people have personal experiences. These experiences aren't based on quantifiable data or physical evidence, but upon faith and individual witness. Whether or not you or anyone wants to believe or disbelieve people have seen angels, Christ, or genies, that is their right, but there is not reason we should disrespect those that do believe. If we don't respect others we cannot expect it in return.

Because they truly believe that they are in his "house". Having been in the temple I can say that, yes it is quiet and peaceful. I have also had a few scary feelings in there as well.

If He were walking in the temple, do you really think that we could keep quiet about that? I couldn't.
