It depends on whether you are in the United States or Europe. If you are in the US I would recommend either David Sibleys Birds of North America or the National Geographic Birds of North America. If you are in Europe my personal favorite is Birds of Europe by Killian Mullaraney, Lars Svenson and Peter Grant.
You want to avoid any books that use photographs. Illustrations that are paintings are much better. You dont have to take into account light conditions and with a painting its going to be an average bird.

I'm deducing from your spelling of color that you are in the US. My favorite by far is Sibley, who has many illustrations per bird and paints birds with the correct proportions and shapes. Peterson or Kaufmann might be easier for a beginner, as Sibley's is hefty, but if you get into it, you'll want to have a Sibley around anyways. I never liked Nat. Geo. The illustrations really vary, and some species look like crap.

Go for Sibleys, or National Geographic. Both have the range maps next to the birds picture. This is much more conveinient, as Petersens has range maps in the back of the book which requires a lot of flipping page and forth which is a waste of time.

I like Petersen's A Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern and Central North America -- well organized, easily recognized color pictures, clear information. Here's a link:

As one amateur birdwatcher to another i would thoroughly recommend any RSPB guides as they are concise and easily interpreted by a newbie. Each species has a full colour photograph, sometimes more than one,and the pocket guide really will fit in your pocket!

in my view i assumed the e book became into rather uncomplicated to appreciate. = The action picture is. . . specific it rather is lots less complicated, some minor issues are replaced and a few small issues are decrease out, yet they're noticeably lots the comparable. nicely i'm speaking with regard to the previous black and white action picture, that's the single we observed at college. What are you perplexed approximately interior the e book? yet no, do not watch the action picture first, it is going to smash the e book.
