God is a super power created by man. So when we created prayer we made it such a way that it would please us. The best example we could get was the Kings at that time. We try to please them first by saying good things they do. How well they treated people or how well they manage the country, like that and then go to the demands. That is why we see most of prayers are not answered. It is a gimmick.
It work like this. Say you took a test and waiting for the result. Now a group called 'fix it ' approaches you and tell you that they will make sure you will pass the test. All you have to do is give them $2000 with 100% money back guaranty. And you did it .Now what they do. Nothing. Some people will pass any way. For those who didn't pass they will give the money back and for that pass the test they keep the money .You got it .Prayer exactly work this way. Some get done anyway.
Even otherwise why God is partial or discriminative.

At least in Indian traditions, prayers were not meant for asking material wealth. The scriptures are filled with prayers seeking welfare of the universe. Some examples are:
1. Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niramayaah, Sarve Bhadrani Pasyantu, Ma Kaschid - Dukha - Bhag - Bhavet. Meaning:
May all be happy. May all all be healthy. May all see others as family members. May none Suffer.
2. Na twaham kaamaye raajyam na swargam naapunar bhavam. Kaamaye duhkhataptaanaam praaninaam aarti naashanam. Meaning:
"I desire no kingdom nor the heavens, not even salvation. All I desire is to remove the suffering from the suffering creatures."
3. Gayatri Mantra. Meaning:
May we attain that excellent glory of the graceful God.

You're missing the point of prayer. The best part of prayer is spending time with God not asking requests. God is not a genie and may not always anwser our request. He knows what is best for us and let's face it we don't. The only way God will even hear your prayer is if you belong to him and the only way to belong to him is to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. So you are right, why should we ask him for material things, prayer is so much more than that. I helps us build a stronger relationship with our Father in heaven. God wants to hear unselfish prayers from the heart not I want, I want.

When people sit to pray it is a "give me list" that never ends, and keeps changing from the time we are born until we die. It is selfish all through, I love this prayer it is called the Serenity Prayer and i think it is full of thought, and wisdom. If you google "Serenity Prayerthis you will get to know more about the history of this prayer.
Grant me the serenity to accept
the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the
things I can;
And wisdom to
know the difference.
Makes sense for todays world!

We pray to god for a purpose to achieve something. But in reality it's you has to take the necessary steps to change your destiny by following the right paths. No matter what prayer you you say but god is one supreme in many forms. There is absolutely nothing like this prayer is worth or strong.it depends upon peoples beliefs.Try saying (chanting) Hanuman Chalisa because it makes you feel strong and it boosts your self-confidence without having to fear someone. All prayers have a positive impact so dont get confused about saying all the prayers everyone suggests.follow the prayers which your mom & dad tells you to.

The best prayer is to remember him and thank for whatever you have. If you deserve more he will give you, inspite of you do prayer or no.
Asking him for materialistic things is your greed, expectations only reduces joy and makes you sad. Just Believe in God and do your deed, he will take care of everything.

OM, AUM..
The most sacred single syllable in the entire literature of Hinduism is OM. This word is constantly on the lips of devout Hindus from the cradle to the grave. It stands for Brahman, both as personal and impersonal God.
Aum -Let us meditate on this syllable, which is the foundation of prayer.
The earth emerges from the waters; plants emerge from the earth; human beings emerge from plants; speech comes from human beings; and Aum comes from speech. Aum is the essence of all essences. It is the highest of the high. It is the ultimate.
Speech and breath combine to form Aum. Speech and breath are like a couple in coitus, and Aum is their offspring. Aum is the fulfillment of their desires.
The syllable Aum signifies assent, for we say it when we assent to something. And assent is nothing but fulfillment.
The syllable Aum is the call to knowledge. We sing the praises of this syllable, which is the key to every kind of knowledge.
Those who know the soul, and those who do not know the soul, stand side by side reciting this syllable. But knowledge and ignorance are quite different. Only when it is recited with knowledge and faith, and with awareness of the hidden connections, does it become truly potent.
Chandogya Upanishad ..

The best prayer is spoken in Matt. 6 when Jesus is teaching His disciples how to pray. We ask above all that God's will is done.
Paul teaches us to pray without ceasing. He tells us to go to God for everything.
There are three types of prayer:
1) Thanksgiving
2) Intercessor
3) Petition
Three answers:
1) Yes
2) No
3) Wait for my perfect timing.
Prayer isn't an empty check waiting for us to fill in the blanks. Prayer is for drawing us nearer to the heart of God and His will. Prayer is a two way street. Sometimes, we need to just be still and allow God to communicate with us.
The living God doesn't give us what we want. He gives us what we need.
Peace be with you.
