I remember this question from my Psychology class in college.

If a mother runs back into a burning house to save her baby, is she doing it as a "selfless act" because she loves her baby, or is she doing it because she wouldnt' be able to live with herself if she didn't attempt to save her baby?

I suspect that selfless acts do happen, but that they are fewer and farther between than most people realize.
