It all depends on your dog. What you'll have to do is get to know the dog. Soon enough you'll know what he means when the expressions change. However, of course there are a few you'll know right off the bat. If you see their teeth..they're not smileing honey..they're saying back off! If the ears are back and the head is down, and the tail is between the legs, but the dog is looking at you..I wouldn't touch then either. It's unsure, scared, nervous, and unpredictably dangerous if it's doing any of these things. If he comes a runnin' and the tails waggin', ears are up, and looks comfy...then you've encountered a dog in a really good mood! When you have one you'll grow to know one another and have a great, funny life together.

Actually dogs facial expressions are not the same as a humans, you cant tell their feelings by their expressions like you can with us. You can tell there feelings by what their tails is doing (wagging or not) and by basically their barking, crying, growling and other body manners.

its a strange thing because i can tell my dogs expression by just looking into her eyes its very weird well usually they a happy if they wag their tail and scared if they hold their tail between their legs or sad if they hide there head or angry if they bark or growl but you will get use to your dogs expressions and if you have it long enough you can even tell their personality

Most knowledge comes from experience of having your dog in your family for a lengthy amount of time. Some things are just dog behavior. Such as: wagging of the tail generally means happy, rolling over on their back means submission/rub me, ears flat on head means angry/danger/mean. But mostly it is going to come from spending lots of quality time with your dog and understanding the things your dog needs and wants. My chihuahua throws her ears back when she stands on my chest and then rubs her head against my cheek.......that is her way of saying, "I love you mommy!"

I'm not an expert like my wife but she knows how our dog feels by the way he is acting. I guess the longer ya know your dog the better you'll be at figuring that one out. good luck

what kind of dog is it? is it one that has funky eyebrows? in which case you can totally read them, i have a shnoodle..lol, his face is one that you can read like a book...you say ball, you see a light go off in his head...i also have a lab, and i guess it all depends on how well you know your dog...you have to really pay attention to read them...although my friends think im weird because i can talk to my dogs, and know what they want....but it really depends on how well you know your dog..
