I got a check yesterday and when ripping the envelope accidently ripped a part of the check as well. It didnt rip in 2 parts, but a few more centimeters down and it would have. So any bankers here can you tell me will the bank accept this check?

A bank can reject a check for any reason... they can't reject cash (legal tender) because of the "for all debts public and private" statement.

If you hand the bank the check in person and are able to explain that it was an accident (that shouldn't be necessary, though), everything should be ok. If it's ripped in so many places that it looks like there was tampering involved, odds are the check will be rejected.

As long as it didn't rip through the micr encoding on the bottom (where the routing number and account number are) then you should be fine. Some banks have special sleeves that the can put the check in to ensure it doesn't rip anymore during processing. Be aware that some tellers might not accept the check, but ask for a manager if they don't.

Checks are suppose to be read by a machine. I have seen them scan the check while I am waiting in person. So, even if you deposit this torn check in the ATM, they still won't verify the funds you have because the check can't be read by the scanner. So, I say either tell that company to issue you another one or tape up the check.

try to tape it up or go back to your job and ask for another one.. and yes some banks don't take ripped checks...

Most likely they will not reject it. I have deposited checks that have been quite damged and never had a problem
