I think this depends on what you can afford and what is important to individuals about their car.

Companies that provide cars usually change them every 3 years or at 100,000 miles mileage.

Some people like the idea of a car being under manufacturers warranty and not needing an MOT (in the UK)
and get a new car before the warranty runs out.

If you just need a reliable car, and you have one, it might be wise to keep it.

Some people want 'the latest model' regardless of how new or good the car they have is.

So I guess its subjective and cash flow related.

I love my car but would get a new one (if I could afford it) if it started to need expensive repairs.

I change mine when it starts to give trouble, and a manufacturer somewhere has released something new that I want.

I bought a Rover 220SDi new in late 1997, intending to replace it in late 2001, but there was nothing on the market then that I thought was worth buying (I had a rare thing - a perfectly reliable Rover). I was finally persuaded by the styling and "surprise and delight" features of the Renault Mégane II, but couldn't get the one I wanted until early 2003. Nothing has been launched since that I want more, so the Mégane stays for now.

Depends on the user and car. People who run bangers change every time an expensive repair is needed. I get a new car every 3 years. Business people usually have their cars on a lease so they change every 3 years. Otherwise general users change about every 5 years.

Let's see.... I'm 27 and have had about ten cars so far.... so that's a car a year.

My husband has had five cars in ten years.

A friend of ours has had two cars in ten years

Another friend gets a new car every six months (no kidding!)... he's pretty restless. He gets a car, geeks it out, hates it, falls in love with another "cool" car, and trades it in.

So, the point of my story is that it really depends. Most people trade their cars in every two to three years.... before scheduled maintenence and before you need to get new tires and what not..

Hope this helps.

I don't know what the average is, but I keep my car until IT is 10-11 years old, regardless of how long I have owned it.
