They whimper in their sleep because they're dreaming about humans, other dogs, small animals or rodents, and their owners. They also have some nightmares, too. For instance, a dog can have a dream about a cat attacking it, or an intruder coming into their territory. I have heard my dog bark in his sleep, move his feet, and growl on several nightly occasions. It depends on what kind of dream the dog is having. Dogs have dreams just like we do, but they have dreams that are relevant to their experiences in their life, and some of those dreams may be about their human family, or specific people in it. My dog loves my grandma, so I'm sure that he has good dreams about her. We may never know how elaborate or how simple dog dreams can be, but we may soon have the technology to find out what dogs are thinking about us, and much more about animal behavior in the near future. We may even be able to telepathically communicate with other animals, but especially our own pets! That would be truly amazing!
