I have had great danes for years. The ones that I have had were always great with children. My niece used to ride mine like a horse when she was very little. They are wonderful companions when the kids like to sit on the floor and read color or whatever. Mine used to be such a wonderful protector and very gentle with my children Just with a little training they are great and will provide company and companionship for years to come

I do own a Great Dane, but I don't have kids. However mine is good with children. In general Danes are very good with people and children but like any dog it depends on the individual. And of course your children need to be taught how to properly interact with a dog. No dog should be expected to suffer abuse at the hands of unknowning children.
You must research research research and then spend a lot of time finding the right breeder. Another option (a very good one) is to adopt a rescue Dane, the rescue will know which Dane is a good fit for your family. There are a lot of resources out there and I suggest you start with this one:

There is a wealth of information on the breed, how to choose the right breeder, and a ton of links. I suggest you check out the forums. There is so much information there for any question you have, and there are new people just like you and people who have had Danes for decades. I will always own a Dane now that I know the breed there is no other dog like them, but they are most definately not for everyone or every family. Good luck on your search for information!

I own Great Danes and have for over 25 years. A well bred, well socialized, well trained Dane is great with kids...anything less and it could be an iffy situation.

I grew up with Great Danes and still have one. They are great with older kids, but they are very large obviously and they LOVE to lean on you. I don't think they are as great with little kids or much older people. Sometimes they can accidentally knock them over when they lean, trying to be friendly. ;) Other then that, out of dozens of danes I've had, I've never really had a problem with anything else. They are generally very loving and loyal. They will protect their family. As long as you're careful with little ones not getting knocked over, Great Danes will love kids like their own puppies, cleaning faces of excess food, watching them carefully, protecting them from strangers. :)

Usually they are good with kids but I did rescue one that was not. Danes can be rather no really lazy. I wouldn't get one for a playmate for the kids.

They are very good with kids, however they are so big they tend to knock toddlers over by accident. However they are lovable dogs and as the saying goes 'gentle giants'.
Just be careful, these dogs arent cheap, if your not willing to pay the money needed, DONT get one, they are expensive to feed and are prone to MANY health issues, one being the most common bloatation that is often fatal! Be careful.

Hi Cutelatinchicforyou!
Dignified, kind, and affectionate, it is playful and patient with children. However, because of her giant size and head strong nature, she should be socialized and obedience trained at an early age and always kept on leash.

AKC says-

The Great Dane must be spirited, courageous, always friendly and dependable, and never timid or aggressive.

No.That my experience with them.. For example my neighbor had one and it about attacked my sister one time.. She was only 3 at the time.. I found they are one person dog .. I strongly wouldn't advise getting one.. I would recommend boxers..
