I was wondering if it is unsafe for a child to be around an animal that is being treated for heartworm?

No we can't get Heartworm. You do want to keep the pet in a crate and do not allow it to get its heartrate up for any reason until you get a negative test result. Only walk the dog on lead for potty. I have a heartworm survivor and we took several on with the katrina flood. We kept them in our homes ti treatment was over then fouind them new homes of their own.
