I was wondering if it is unsafe for a child to be around an animal that is being treated for heartworm?

No, but if you get the liquid kind that you put on their body behind their head, you should keep the children from touching that which can be bad for them. If it is the pill form you need not worry about them touching the kids. Contracting heartworm from a dog is very uncommon. I wouldn't worry about that.

Please see Google search for more details and images on Heartworm. The dog heartworm is a negligible public health risk, because it is unusual for humans to become infected.

Obviously your vet diagnosed the dog as having heartworm, why didn't you ask them?
