I believe it's automatic when you reach a specific percentage or number of answers in a specific category...
From Y!Answers Help:
What is a Top Contributor?
A Top Contributor is a member of the Answers community who has shown that they are knowledgeable in a particular category. Each Answers user can be a top contributor in up to three categories.
The top contributor badge is dynamic you earn it or lose it depending on your recent participation in a particular category. The more actively you contribute, the more likely you will earn a badge. Just like featured users or category leaders, it's another way to feature community members who might otherwise be overlooked.

I was kinda wondering the same thing.
It says I'm a top contributor in Jokes & Riddles and Singles & Dating. And I have no idea of how that happened!
I guess for getting best answer in those topics. Probably an automatic recongnition.

You post a bit in a forum and hope your name comes out of the hat when they decide on Top Contributors
It doesn't seem to be linked to anything relevant - length of time on yahoo answers, percentage best answers, number of answers, or even limited to accounts which are active.
So at the moment it seems to be a lottery, so making the recognition worthless.

No clue whatsoever. It just showed up one day. I spent a lot of time here in R&S but got tired of all the drama and anger and hate, so I went to S&D. Much less personal towards me.

It's automatic. You need to be a regular contributer about what you know in a specific area.

I don't know, I thought right away that Yahoo was putting targets onto certain people and they snuck up and stuck one on me and I'm right I keep getting targeted.
