Do we all have the same punishment? Or as many films and comics have taught me will the punishment fit the crime? In which case - having done nothing really wrong but not believe in god what would happen? Would I just have lots of Christians on day trips from heaven say "I told you so"???

Final Judgment

In the Book of Revelation the Apostle John wrote concerning a final judgment of the wicked:

And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and the books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books... And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:12,15).

The reality of a final judgment is clearly taught in Scripture. But the Bible also indicates that the people who go to hell do so because they have rejected God's provision for salvation. The Bible says that God does not want anyone to go to hell:

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).

Thus we conclude by saying:

The Bible teaches the reality of a final place of judgment for the wicked.

Those who spend eternity in hell, do so because they rejected God's love and His provision for salvation.

It is God's desire for everyone to come to Him by faith and receive the salvation that He offers.

Which hell and which idea of hell and who's? To the Nordic peoples it was icy, for obvious reasons.

As an atheist ( a -theist, w/o belief in god/gods), I'm astonished and amused at those who think to frighten me with their hell. Such staggering stupidity!

"I'm a Christian and I believe Hell is the absence of God. Fire is an allegory for how much it hurts to be completely disconnected from him. If you choose something other that to search for Go with an open mind, God says, "All right, have it your way." And he leaves you with that. Hell is what you choose other than God. You are sometimes left in delusion. I think Luke13 has the story of the rich man and the beggar where the rich man went to Hell. Check out what his hell was like. "

Now what of the rich man whom Christ told to give up all his wordly possesions to follow him and enter heaven? (eye of the needle..)
Would you do that? If not, how are you more worthy to enter heaven than the guy in the fable?

I definitely go with the open mind. I would eat from the tree of knowledge. To imply that searching for knowlege is a sin is a rather pitiful giveaway.

Yes, I've checked that out. I read the christian bible as a child, repeatedly, cover to cover--excepting thingummy begat thingammy begat.. That's what made it ludicrous to me before I entered jr high. The christian bible has some of the most beutiful literature, and I value it for that reason. The mythology is interesting as well. The sermon on the mount is a gem.

I am a minister's son and a christian. I'll most likely see you there if i go too, lol. No but seriously, I dont think anyone goes to hell unless the crime is really immoral or unethical.

I believe it all depends on just how bad the crime is. I've said some bad language before. (Killing someone, stealing, robbing, doing drugs etc.) all leads to hell. Although some great people have done bad things........hmmmm....

Anyway, cussing or anything simple like that wont lead to hell. I've even smoked and quit and probably wont go to hell.

Comics and Films pertain to an artists vision of hell. Noone really knows what its like, until they die and go there.

The degree of punishment will be commensurate with one's sin against the light which one has received.
One good passage that indicated degrees of punishment is Luke 12:47-48: "That servant who know his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be BEATEN WITH MANY BLOWS. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be BEATEN WITH FEW BLOWS. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked". Other verses on this issue include MAT 10:15; 16:27; Rev. 20:12,13; 22:12.
Jesus affirmed that the wicked "will go away to ETERNAL punishment, but the righteous to ETERNAL life" (Mat 25:46)

Ha! That would be a great punishment! It would be just like being on Earth.

Lazarus is an interesting story. So, if the rich man believed in God but treated people like dirt, he would have gone to heaven, right?

You would love it! I'll be right down there waiting for you so I can give you everything you want and pleasure you in sinful way. It's a guarantee your toes will curls, you'll writhes in your juice and sweat, scream and moans, you'll be panting hard and sweating heavily, and you will probably end up try to push me away because it'll be overwhelming for you to handle a such pleasure. Especially if it's from someone who is very experienced and have great knowledge of female anatomy. Even better, I have a body that you dream a man to have along with great tools and a long snake like tongue that is even more agile than average human.

Now you have something to look forward to ;-)

Here is what I believe. After the judgment we will be given a glory depending on our faithfulness and righteousness in this life. We will then tend to gravitate towards like minded people. The real hell will be knowing what you could have achieved but you didn't.

in my personal take on hell, i think that everyone goes for a time to learn *everything* that they have ever done to cause pain or destroy love & peace. and depending on how "bad" the person has been it can be a very horrible experience. but i believe everyone gets as many chances (lives) as they need to live a good life and become "enlightened" (ie, go to "heaven")

Not as bad as many Christians think. According to the Bible, "the soul that sinneth, it shall die." Ezekiel 18:4 and "the wages of sin is death" Romans 6:23. It also says that "he that is dead is freed from sin." Romans 6:7. Clearly, your death pays the price for your sins. Death is the absence of life. Not life in some other form or dimension.
