What would cause a large black area between the installed programs in add an remove programs ( in the control panel) Windows xp pro?

This can be as a result of a currupt file. Check the name of the icon and try see if you can install the file again.Make sure u have an antivirus installed.then scan ur system to be sure there is no virus

try System File Check.
Start > Run > cmd sfc /scannow and have your XP install disc handy.
sfc is system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.
If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.
