DO NOT EVER go to buy a car without knowing all the answers.
Just because a salesman smiles at you doesn't mean they are your friends. They are NOT looking out for your best interest. Their first thought when they see you is... "How much money can I get out of this sucker?????"
Sure, you can ask them all the right questions... but they will lie and act like they don't know the answer if the truth might cost them a sale. If you go informed, you can ask questions just to test them to see how much of a liar they are.
This site has all the answers you need to buy a car....

My strongest suggestion is to buy from an authorized dealer of the brand you are considering. They will be the most knowledgeable about their cars AND you should be able to get a factory extended warranty (not an after-market one) on that car.
Additionally look/ask for the following:
1. Carfax report: This will show you if the car has been in a major accident. This will also show you if the car was privately owned and how many different people have owned that car. Avoid cars in accidents, cars in rental fleets, taxi service and high number of owners.
2. Factory service history: this is obtained from the dealers' system. This will show you if the car has been regularly serviced and if there have been repairs on the car. Lots of repairs should be a concern. Ask the service adviser to explain the service history since these records are mostly in codes.
Additionally eye-ball the car, sit in it and get a sense of how well the car was taken care of as a personal test of the cars presence. This is also important to do before falling in love with a particular unit.
If you decide to buy the car and if something still needs replacing or repairing (as sometimes they have not been able to get it done yet), get it in writing on a "We Owe You" type of form. Verbal commitments are hard to enforce.
Good luck in your search. If you follow the above guidelines, you should have most of the information you need about the car you are considering.

Do your homework first. Husband sold used cars for years....Check the bluebook prices by Kelly Bluebook online or NADA website. make sure you know your prices for cars with upgrades like power windows, seats, sound system, etc..Check whether the car was in an accident or is a repo..read the books in the car f it comes with them it will tell you if the person who owned it previously did the proper maintenace on the car like taking it for oil changes, tune ups etc....if they were diligent it is prrobably a good car. Ask about warranties on the car and is the factory warranty still current . Certain cars have things that go bad on them like some their exhaust system goes bad others trasmissions go bad...so research this. Ride in the car and listen for any pings or pangs. If the engine makes noise this could be a really bad sign thats pomething is wrong. If it has a hard shift it could mean the transmission is getting ready to go. make sure the car you are buying is priced right with the miles that it has and know that a really old car with low miles is not a good thing because after a certain amount of time the internal parts dry rot,. A car that is a 2004 with 130k on it will price a lot less then a 2004 with 60,000 on it. Figure 15k a year and if there is a lot more then that then the person ragged the car and you probably do not want it. Good luck! I worked at a car auction for years and my husband was the manager.

Oh boy, your starting from scratch...
Heres some great websites:
consumerguide.com
- You can research new/used cars and find out their pro's/cons' AND potential problems
fueleconomy.gov
- Find out how much gas it drinks
Always ask for vehicle history AND possibility service history, you want to stay away from anything that has a accident/insurance claim.
If you find a car you like, go home and read about it... You can find that it has alot of problems, or you can find out that it is a great car... Dont let them scare you with "other people are coming to buy it, its now or never'
Never sign a contract or pay a down-payment unless you are 100% sure you want the car.. If you know anyone that is a mechanic make sure you let them see it first (you will have to write this into your contract "subject to my mechanic's inspection) - If you dont have a mechanic, i would try to find one that will charge you 50-80 bucks to look at a car and tell you the condition.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS get it in writing... If they tell you that "they will fix it when you buy it" then make sure it says that on the contract, if its not on the contract, they wont do it
You have to educate yourself about the car's you want... Salesmen make big bucks off people who dont know any better
Bring someone that knows cars, you want to check the car's lines to make sure everything fits perfectly... You want to check the tire wear to make sure you have decent life remaining... You want to check the fluids to make sure they are clean
As for a car your looking for...
How luxury? How expensive? Domestic? Import?

When looking at any used vehicle you should get as much information about the car as possible. Who was the previous owner? What was the car used for? Was it a rental car? Those types of questions. You should always get a Carfax report on the vehicle to verify its history.

you need to check some website and consume reports on how reliable the car is, what is the gas per milage. make sure you go to the dealer after you have done your research because most dealers or car salesman don't speak the truth and you will get rip off.

ask them to run a carfax report on the car you want to buy. If they arn't willing to do it for free, you don't want to buy the car.
