They are actually both very good being that they're both cardiovascular exercises. When weight loss is the goal Cardio exercises are the best.

As far as choosing the treadmill or the bike studies say that riding the bike is "safer." Not only do you not have to worry about falling off, but it puts less stress on the joints. However, some studies also say that the treadmill can burn about 200 more calories per hour than the bike.

What you need to decide is which exercise you feel you can do on a regular basis. While running on a treadmill may burn more calories, riding the bike for an hour may be more comfortable for you and you may be able to get more into the habit of exercising with it.

Hope this is helpful.

I commend you for taking part in a health plan of sorts. A treadmill and an exercise bike by themselves won't lose your weight. Sure, I know you mean to use them. What I am trying to say is that weight loss is tied to excess caloric burn. When you have burned 3500 excess calories, you lose one pound of fat. How quickly you burn 3500 calories depends on the intensity in which you exercise. If your question is, "which provides me with the potential for the most intensity", then I would say the treadmill. Running on the treadmill is a higher impact exercise. Walking on it is extremely low impact. If you intend to do no more than walk, then I'm afraid it will take you a long time to lose weight, although it is possible, depending on what you eat.

You are going to want to do exercises that dont build a lot of muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat so eating healthy is one way, but you can try running or brisk walking. Pretty much any exercise will build more muscle but those two should get you started. I am losing weight right now. I have three kids and am only 25, My problem is I keep shrinking from osteoperosis. So when I was 5'7 at 160 lbs I was not overweight, but now that I am 5'4 at 155 lbs I am. I dont look fat but it is there. I hope that this was helpful.

Thats a nice prize, and you get better heart health as a bonus. I would alternate for several reasons. 1. The treadmill is nice but harder on the joints, but at a slow jog, it really works well....2. Muscle memory, if you do the same thing every day, you're body gets used to it and doesnt react the same. 3. Boredom, who wants to do the same thing every day.

Also, throw in some calesthinics too....remember those, push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, squat thrusts, leg raises, all those things from elementary school gym class.....They may be old but they work.

Good luck on your prize.

You would use more energy on an exercise bike!! However why not consider running (as opposed to walking) on a treadmill. This will burn the most calories!!

The way your question is worded, it would be easier to walk on a treadmill than walk on a exercise bike.

Running on the treadmill is the best way to lose weight but remember to keep at your heartrate so your only burning fat not sugar.Take up weightraining as well so you get to burn fat faster aslo if you find your at the same weight for a month dont worry thats just water retention.Good luck!
