You can either email or call the local visitors center for where you are going. I have done this many times most of the major cities have their own and you can find it doing a websearch. When I do it I just type in (Name Of City and State) Visitors Information. The first one or two sites that pull up are usually the ones that I am looking for. You can also sometimes contact diffrent counties for smaller towns and they will send you stuff example Lane County in Oregeon does visitor information for several small towns. Good Luck most of them will send you tons of info and coupons for diffrent places.

I am presuming that you meant human tourist guides and not the printed or net based tourist guide books, planners etc.
The human guide adds a personal touch and can explain the history of the place much better than any printed or tape recorded or synthesised voice etc. The human guide can make the tour a real experience by taking care of many small details which cannot be done by machines.
I am of course talking of a good, qualified and knowledgeable human guide.

when we are visiting a place for the first time & it has a lot of history involved, its always better to take the help of a tour guide. they know the history of that place the best. its not possible for us to retain whatever we may have read about the place prior to our visit. but since the guides are dealing with that history on a regular basis, they can inform us totally. guides help to promote tourism a lot too. they can make any visit very interesting & memorable depending on the way they describe any place to us.

He is the one who can prioritise the tourists' interest, both on an individual and group basis, in a particular tourist spot;
knows how to serialise the places of visit according to working hours and other relevant data,
arranges for a convenient mode of travel, takes them around and entertains them with the finer details and importance of the subject visited with a narration that leaves behind a lasting impression in the minds of the tourist that they have performed an important action to remember and value thought their existence ,in relation and as a part of their life,
looking into the events that have happened and may pass on to the future along with evolution of culture and economy,
and love to come back again and again for the sheer enjoyment of their travel
to understand the changes in their personality along with the new perception of the places that underwent external changes, even though the subject has stood firm with the passage of time.
