Need to know on how well it cycles with different types of ammo? its accuracy at 50 yards? does it jam often or is it reliable? value for money? ease of maintainence? can anything be done to 'soften' the very stiff trigger?

I have a number of Czech made firearms and they are some of the best made. The CZ bolt-action .22s have a cult following....although somewhat expensive they are lengendary performers.

If it's your first .22 rifle, I'd say go with the Ruger but also buy some extras to make it more accurate and easier to operate, particularly a better barrel. Out of the box, the 10/22 suffers from some inherent liabilities and while a decent .22 it needs a couple of hundred bucks to make it really good. The best, most accurate cheap .22 is the Marlin 60, but there's little in the way of 'accessories' to customize it, so it's going to stay a basic rifle.

I've had several 10/22s and they are good rifles if you put a decent barrel on them. Any .22 will have problems with some ammo. You need to shoot and see what yours likes and does not like.

If you were asking about the CZ bolt actions, I'd say get one for sure. I think the semi-auto is a very good .22 rifle, but it's not got a lot of publicity and it's price makes it a gun for serious CZ fans.

I just checked RimfireCentral.com, which is a forum of all things .22 and some of those guys are real hard core experts and shooters. Look around there for a while and get some of their opinions on the CZ 511. You will also find many hard core 10/22 modifiers and some Marlin fans as well. Probably worth your time to do a bit of research there before you buy.

In any event, I have never had a .22 rifle that was not a lot of fun, even some old 1950s single shots I have. Enjoy and happy shooting.

Get the CZ-511. It's a quality gun and you probably will not have to worry about replacement parts. You can always get a 10/22 later (they are cheap). I own two CZ-452ZKM2E bolt-action rifles. CZ guns are more gun for the money. If those guns were made in the here they would cost far more or be of far less quality. I'll admit that I have never shot one, but I would bet on one to be well worth the money spent. CZ-USA will sell you any small part if you want a small parts inventory. I have deal with them before, and they are very good at customer service and don't question people.

Every 10-22 can be different. I noticed a guy saying Winchester 333 and 555 packs are no good. I agree that they are really poor quality but my rifle will shoot them. On the other hand remington thunderbolts are horrible. I use the thunderbolts for pistols that jam on cheap ammo and require 40 grain so I do love thunderbolts my ruger just doesn't. I wouldn't carry it around in the woods because mine has a 20 inch bull target barrel and its heavy. Honestly if I'm in the woods and it was legal to just open carry I'd have a black hawk serpa and a centerfire pistol. Rugers are for shooting recreationally and improving your shooting abilities. I wouldn't use it for home defense unless I had a selective fire one with a very short barrel that would almost classify it as a submachine. A suppresor would be nice as well but honestly defensive wise I would hesiate to even consider it as a back up.

I would say for the money the 10/22 is the better deal.
You can order any form of upgrade out of most catalogs and do most the work your self.
Where as the CZ you may find parts to be not so available and the trigger will need to be reworked by a gunsmith.
With the 10/22 it’s set up price would be much cheaper and has a proven history.
If it were my money I would get the 10/22 and up grade it and still come in at a much lower price then the CZ and a trigger job.
That my opinion.

I own three of them in different configurations. Very reliable with most ammunition, but make sure it is with what you plan to use. Mine have no problem plinking with the Federal 550 packs from Wal-Mart. CCI Stingers are the bees knees for hunting. I have successfully hunted coyote at close range with one. It would be adequate defense for most animals as few would continue to be a threat after being hit even with a .22. Only especially large or dangerous animals would stick around to finish you off with a few .22 slugs in them. In reality, coyotes and wolves will usually avoid you, though they may attack your pets. A Ruger 10/22 is perhaps the most useful survival weapon ever invented.
